Book on Headaches (Very Helpful!)            Three Steps to Reduce/Eliminate Headaches              Dietary Triggers
Treating Headaches and Migraines
Headaches (see description above) can be a very debilitating health issue, causing severe
pain, nausea, irritability, dizziness, brain fog, and vision symptoms.  We have helped many
clients relieve their headaches through acupuncture.  Our treatments help lower tension in
the head and shoulders, as well as relax the client.  It’s especially helpful to be treated during
a headache, as we can usually resolve the pain as well as learn which meridians are involved
in the imbalance so we can help prevent future headaches.  (call in to 314-772-4325 if the

While acupuncture is a great tool to help headaches, most people require lifestyle
adjustments to keep the headaches away.  Research has shown that there are many
headache triggers which people encounter every day.  Some triggers can be avoided
(certain foods, caffeine, medications and alcohol) and some are harder to avoid
(weather changes/barometer, stress and hormones).     What is important is to lower
the total trigger load, so that any one trigger doesn’t push you above you headache
threshold.  The lifestyle changes lower the total trigger load, so that unavoidable
triggers like weather and hormonal changes do not tip one into a headache response.
Our acupuncturist Bryan has helped many headache sufferers become pain free.  In addition
to treating you with acupuncture, he can explain how important lifestyle changes are.  As
many clients resist changing their lifestyle, Bryan can inspire the client that the changes are
worth it, and that true healing can occur.  Clients who previously resisted change typically find

We’ve compiled some helpful resources for headache sufferers.  We highly
recommend
“Heal Your Headache” by David Bucholz, M.D.  He has seen
thousands of people suffering from headaches, and has developed a three step
process to help people recover from recurring headaches.  So many of our
clients are grateful to have learned from this book.  Even better, once clients
implement this three step program, many of them need much fewer acupuncture
treatments or none at all.   This book is available at our clinic or

One aspect in the book “Heal Your Headache” that some of our clients find difficult is the issue
concerning  medications.  Dr. Bucholz, who is a very respected neurologist, has found most
take-as-you-need headache medications to be of little value to his patients.  Oftentimes, the
medications relieve pain, only to set the patient up for a rebound headache 1-2 days later.  He
advises most patients to greatly reduce and eliminate these kinds of medications.  Since these
medications are often taken at the discretion of the client, quitting them is usually not a
problem with their doctors.   But as these medications have usually been prescribed by their
physician, we always encourage clients to talk to their doctor before they discontinue their use.

Headaches can be in many locations, and called many things.  You may refer to your pain as a migraine, a
sinus headache, etc.  What they all have in common is blood vessel inflammation, resulting in pain.   In this
article, we will use the word ‘headache’ to include all of the following types of syndromes:
